Resources & Events for Researchers

Community and events:

UW's research community is vibrant, diverse, collaborative and committed to scientific advancement and education. The Office of Research and Graduate Education is adding to the already rich and varied offerings from the School of Medicine’s academic departments and graduate-level programs by offering events that engage biomedical scientists at all levels of training and professional development.

The Bioscience Careers Seminars are an interdepartmental series introducing graduate students and post-docs to a wide range of careers in biological and biomedical sciences. These student-organized seminars host monthly speakers from various fields across the biosciences who have chosen paths outside of academia.

Invited speakers share their career experience and advise students about how their training led to jobs in their field, salary expectations, competitiveness and demand for their work. The seminars are informal and open to all students and post-docs. The seminar closes with a brief reception and refreshments allowing the speaker and participants the opportunity for 1:1 conversations.

Visit Bioscience Careers for more information about upcoming lectures or to view previous lectures.

The Future Faculty Fellows Program prepares postdoctoral scientists for successful careers that combine research, service, mentoring, and teaching. Historically this two-day workshop on career development has been closely linked with the Science Teaching Experience for Post-Docs (STEP) apprenticeship, which provides a faculty-mentor experience in designing and teaching an undergraduate course. Postdocs can attend only the workshop or both the workshop and the teaching apprenticeship. Both consistently receive high marks from participants.

The workshop is free and open to any postdoctoral fellow in their second year or beyond from the UW, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and Seattle Children's Research Institute. The workshop is directed by Dr. Chet Moritz, Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, and by Dr. Rosana Risques, Assistant Professor of Pathology.

For more information on the workshop, please contact fffp@uw.edu.

The UW Medicine Inventor of the Year awards honor outstanding UW research scientists whose inventions have had a major positive effect on both healthcare and our local economy. Each year, the Inventor of the Year selection committee solicits nominations from department chairs and administrators which are then reviewed based on the following criteria:

  • Number of lives saved or improved.
  • Biomedical impact of the invention.
  • Contribution to the bioscience sector.
  • Contributions to the UW CoMotion mission to extend the impact of University of Washington research through the creation of partnerships that encourage investment in innovation.
  • Contributions to the UW School of Medicine faculty community.

The Science in Medicine Lecture Series has been providing UW researchers the opportunity to share findings within and outside their fields since 1976. Science in Medicine presenters are nominated by members of the UW scientific community and final selection is determined by a committee of peers from the Council on Research and Graduate Education.

The Science Teaching Experience for Postdocs (STEP) educational opportunity engages a diverse pool of postdoctoral fellows at the University of Washington and affiliate institutions in a closely mentored apprenticeship to learn how to teach scientifically with inclusive, demonstrably effective, student-centered pedagogies. The postdocs work in teams of three to co-design and co-teach their courses. Each team delivers a 10-week, special topics seminar course for UW undergraduates at UW Bothell and UW Seattle campuses. Interested postdocs may also wish to apply for the UW Medicine Future Faculty Fellows Program.

For more information on the STEP program, please contact program director Dr. Becca Price (beccap@uw.edu).

Clinical Research Staff (CRS) Training

UW Medicine's CRS training is mandatory for all staff with job responsibilities related to clinical research involving human subjects. Training ensures clinical research is administered in a compliant and consistent manner and offers the best possible protections to our patient participants, to the scientific principles under investigation, and to the University at large.

The UW School of Medicine Clinical Research Coordinator Peer Network (CRCPN) is a resource to front-line clinical research staff, providing UW-specific training and networking.

The Clinical Trial Management System Program Office (CTMS) is a single, centralized, web-based enterprise resource spanning the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

The School of Medicine Grants Review Unit within the Office of Research and Graduate Education reviews UW School of Medicine proposals to ensure that they meet both UW and UW Medicine requirements.

The Grants Review Unit also partners with the UW Office of Research to coordinate funding opportunities which limit the number of applicants accepted.

The UW School of Medicine Research Administrator Peer Network (RAPN) offers bimonthly opportunities to train and discuss pre- and post-award job responsibilities.

The Office of Research and the School of Medicine have complementary Training Grant guidance materials to address pre-award and post-award responsibilities.

Assistance recruiting participants for research studies is provided by the Institute of Translational Health Science. UW researchers can post their research studies to the site, and potential volunteers can search for studies that apply to them.
