About Martin A. Makela
Martin Makela, M.D., is a board-certified physician with an interest in management of sickle cell anemia. He is the Medical Chief of Staff of the UW Medical Center Emergency Department from 2019 to 2021. Dr. Makela is an associate professor of Emergency Medicine at UW School of Medicine. He has received the Seattle Top Doctor award by Seattle Met Magazine.
Dr. Makela earned his M.D. at the UW and returned to Seattle after retiring from a 25-year career in the US Navy. He received both the Navy Air Medal and the Bronze Star and has been awarded the UW Medicine CARES award for exemplifying UW Medicine Service Culture Guidelines. He has lectured nationally on "Trauma and Teamwork."
Personal Interests
Dr. Makela spends his off hours above and below the planet as an avid SCUBA diver and pilot. He believes the purpose of summer is to train for ski season and watch the Sounders.
